Local road pricing proposed

Summary

Rising demand for transport is a consequence of a strong and prosperous economy, as well as increasing globalisation of markets for goods and services.

'Strengthening Local Delivery: Draft Local Transport Bill' (Cm. 7043) aims to tackle congestion and improve public transport.

Building on the ideas outlined in the 'Putting Passengers First' (Available to download) published in December 2006, the Department for Transport aims to create a transport system which:

  • Sustains economic growth and improved productivity
  • Contributes to objectives for tackling climate change and other environmental challenges
  • Enhances access to jobs, services and social networks, including for the most disadvantaged.
