New Government bills outlined in the Queen’s speech
Summary
‘Her Majesty's Most Gracious Speech to Both Houses of Parliament - Delivered on Tuesday, 25 May 2010’ (Cm. Unnumbered) sets the agenda for the Government’s 2010-11 session of Parliament as the Queen announces 22 bills for the new legislative programme.
The following are among the new coalition Government’s commitments:
- action to reduce the structural deficit and restore economic growth;
- a fairer and simpler tax and benefits system;
- modernisation of the Royal Mail;
- limiting the number of non-European economic immigrants;
- legislation in the fields of education, financial services regulation, police, local government and Parliament (including a reformed and elected second House);
- a referendum on the Alternative Vote system;
- the abolition of identity cards; and
- repeal of unnecessary laws.
