Summary
In celebration of Her Majesty’s birthday, the Queen announced this year’s list of people who have made a positive impact in their professions and across communities.
'The London Gazette Birthday Honours List Supplement - June 2010' recognises individuals for many types of contributions in varying fields of work, including:
- Education
- Health
- Sport
- Industry and the Economy
- Arts and Media
The majority of the awards were given to ordinary people who have made a real difference in their communities. Women were awarded 47% of the honours and 7% of recipients were from an ethnic minority background.
The British honours system is one of the oldest in the world, having evolved over 650 years.
Anyone can receive an award if they reach the required standard of merit or service and anyone can nominate someone for an award.
