Restructuring the Post Office

Summary

The Government believes that the current network of Post Offices is unsustainable and has outlined plans for restructuring, which involve closures, relocations and new delivery mechanisms.

This Report ‘Stamp of Approval? Restructuring the Post Office Network’ (HC 276) examines this proposed restructuring strategy.

The Report looks at the distance-based criteria that would guide closures, the consultation on the plans at a local level, the future viability of the network, the services the Post Offices could provide to ensure their viability and the nature of the successor to the Post Office Card Account. You can read more about the House of Commons Treasury Committee 2006 Report ‘Banking the Unbanked: Banking services, the Post Office Card Account and financial inclusion’ on Have Your Say.

In this inquiry, the House of Commons Trade and Industry Committee heard evidence from the Secretary of State and received comments on the Government’s proposals from two key organisations representing the views of sub-postmasters and consumers, the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters (NFSP) and Postwatch.
