Government funds help to increase renewable energy supply

Summary

The Government recognises that it is essential to expand renewable energy supplies in order to tackle a global environmental issue of climate change.

Between 2000 and 2009, Government-funded direct support for renewable energy technology was £265 million.

Renewable sources of energy comprise:

  • Wind
  • Water
  • Biomass
  • Solar
  • Geothermal

‘Government Funding for Developing Renewable Energy Technologies’ (HC 35), reports that by 2010, the target was to obtain 10% of UK electricity supplies from renewable sources.

The available evidence suggests:

  • Direct support has contributed to an increase in renewable energy generation.
  • Industry has had to seek funding from many short-term schemes to support long-term projects.
  • Funding has successfully supported innovation.
