Group set up to consider financial support for House of Lords members

Summary

An ad-hoc group was set up in December 2009 to consider and consult on matters relating to the fiscal contributions provided for Members of the House of Lords.

The group was formed following an agreement by the House to the principles of a recent report by the Review Body on Senior Salaries (SSRB), to follow terms of reference set by the House.

‘Financial Support for Members of the House of Lords’ (HL 13) summarises the group’s recommendations for the House Committee:

  • the introduction of a daily allowance of £200;
  • strict arrangements and greater transparency over Members' principal residences and London accommodation;
  • agreement with the SSRB's recommendations on an overnight accommodation allowance;
  • rejection of the need for taxis to be provided for Members for late sittings;
  • the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority approach to reimbursement of travel costs to MPS be considered for Members of the House of Lords;
  • implementation of the SSRB's recommendations on publication and regular random checks; and
  • an independent review of the new scheme after one year.
