Summary
This White Paper, 'Eliminating World Poverty: Building Our Common Future (Cm. 7656)', deals with the challenges presented by the global recession, climate change, and fragile and failing states. It reaffirms the Government's commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and the necessity of working in partnership with other countries and organisations towards that end.
Measures to promote economic recovery and greener growth are outlined, covering trade, agriculture and food security, low carbon sustainable growth. Governance and tax issues are also addressed. Climate change hits poorest countries hardest and the need for global collective action that limits greenhouse gas emissions and manages the environment sustainably is clear. Building peaceful states and societies is the final focus of the paper.
The paper emphasises the interdependence of the world and the need to act through the international system. Development aid also needs to be effective and achieve value for money, especially in the current economic climate.
Earlier White Papers on eliminating poverty were published in 2000, Focus on Globalisation - Cm. 5006, and 2006, Making Governance Work for the Poor - Cm. 6876.
