PM’s anti-terror statement

Summary

On July 25th 2007, the Prime Minister made a statement in the House of Commons, outlining plans to increase anti-terrorism capabilities in the UK.

Measures included:

  • A uniformed border force comprised of Customs and immigration officers to act as a single checkpoint for passport control and Customs
  • A review of the use of intercept evidence in court
  • Consultations to be held on possible extension of the detention period in which the police may hold suspects without charge
  • Extension of biometric visas to all visa applicants from March 2008 and biometric ID cards for UK citizens starting in 2009
  • A review of protection for crowded places and public infrastructure – with new powers to protect key utilities to be included in the Counter-Terrorism Bill
  • £70m to go to local authorities and community groups for citizenship and anti-extremism projects.

The Prime Minister also stated that a National Security Strategy would publish in Autumn 2007.
