Summary

‘The London Gazette New Year Honours List Supplement (December 2007)’ is the first Honours List recommended by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Its aim is to reflect and pay tribute to outstanding achievement and service across the entire community.

The New Year Honours are awarded to celebrate the concluding year and mark the beginning of the new year. Recipients of Honours in previous years have included statesmen, captains of industry, inventors, actors and musicians, community leaders, and other major contributors to the life of the United Kingdom, its territories and dependencies.

Recipients of the 2008 New Year Honours included:

  • Michael Parkinson, television and radio presenter - for services to Broadcasting
  • Kylie Minogue, singer - for services to Music
  • Stuart Rose, Chief Executive, Marks and Spencer plc - for services to the Retail Industry and to Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Professor Ian Wilmut, Director, Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine and creator of Dolly the Sheep - for services to Science
  • Des Lynam, sports commentator and broadcaster - for services to Sport
  • Brian Ashton, Head Coach, England rugby team - for services to Sport
  • Sir Ian McKellen, actor - for services to Drama and to Equality
  • George Alagiah, broadcaster and author - for services to Journalism.
