Foreign national prisoners to be automatically deported

Summary

The UK Borders Bill relates to immigration and asylum matters.

It proposes provisions dealing with detention at ports, biometric registration, treatment of claimants, enforcement, deportation of criminals and information resources. It implements elements of the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) review published in July 2006, and it is part of a package of measures to support the work of the Border and Immigration Agency.

Specific measures proposed include:

  • New powers to require individuals subject to immigration control to apply for an ID document containing biometric information, with associated penalties and appeal rights for non-compliance with compulsory registration
  • The procedure under which a foreign national prisoner with be automatically deported at the end of their sentence for specified offences
  • New powers for immigration officers to detain individuals at ports pending the arrival of police officers subject to a maximum detention period of three hours.
