Hansard
Hansard is the printed transcript of
parliamentary debates. It is not a verbatim transcription but is edited to
remove "repetitions, redundancies and obvious errors".
Commons Hansard
covers proceedings in the Commons Chamber, Westminster Hall and Standing
Committees. Lords Hansard covers proceedings in the Lords Chamber and its Grand
Committees. Hansard also publishes Written Ministerial Statements and Written
Answers made by Government ministers in response to questions "tabled" or asked
by MPs.
Hansard is printed daily, first thing in the morning, and
reports the business of the previous day in Parliament. Hansard reporters
record proceedings, sitting in the Press Gallery of the Commons, even if the
debates continue into the middle of the night.
Parliamentary debates
have been reported officially since 1803, were published by the Hansard family
from 1811 to 1909 and have been known as 'Hansard' since 1943.
See the Hansard
website - Daily Debates are published on this website the next working day
at 8 am.
